HOUSE OF ROBERTS BLOG
HEY DAD,
You need a coach...
My oldest son is an athlete and I love watching him play; I even enjoy watching him practice. The funny thing about your kids playing sports is it’s a place where you are okay with another adult yelling at them. Honestly, is there any other arena in society where you would give permission to a grown man or woman to scream at your child? Why is that not an issue? For me, it’s because they are coaching my son, I recognize that though he might have a natural ability in a sport he still needs someone to come alongside and teach him techniques, strategies, and mindsets so that he can be the best version of himself.
Now my son gets coached, I don’t. Why is that? I’m on the sidelines and not on the field; my son is the one who gets the benefit of being coached because he is actually on the field. Spectators don’t have access to the coaches, but to those brave souls who have stepped onto the field of play the coach is now at their disposal.
Jesus said in John 14:26, “…the Holy Spirit, whom my Father will send in my name, will teach you all things…” In other words, the Holy Spirit is this divine coach that has been sent from Heaven to help coach and teach you. The Holy Spirit actually dwells on the inside of you Dad, and you have access to Him whenever you need Him.
Why is it then that many of us dads struggle to be taught and trained by this great coach? Could it be that some of us are on the sidelines of life, just spectating and as a result, there is no coaching happening? Right now, I am in the middle of this massive step of faith that my wife and I took because we felt that God was leading us to do it. To be honest, when I took this step I expected all this miraculous stuff to break out, but do you know what I feel happening more than anything else? I feel like I am being coached at another level. I can feel the Holy Spirit coaching me on what I need to start doing, and what I need to stop doing. I can sense Him challenging my perspectives and changing my desires. Why? I think it’s because I am on the field; I’m not just spectating. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I was doing nothing with my life before this, but the Bible does say that God takes us from glory to glory. In other words, we are always on a journey where God calls us to play at a higher level than we are right now, or sometimes He even calls us to play on a different field. Whatever the case, we need a coach to help us, we need the Holy Spirit.
Dad, is there an area of your life where you feel like you’re losing? An area where you are dissatisfied with the results and frustrated because you’re not sure what to do about it? Is there an area that feels like you are just spectating? Maybe it’s as a husband or a father, maybe it’s at work, or just life in general. Take that brave step and get back onto the playing field. You may not know what to do or how to operate in this new playing field but lean into the Holy Spirit and He will teach you. If you don’t know how to listen to the Holy Spirit then get around some Godly men who know how and they will teach you. There are more fields to be played on for you Dad; there are higher levels for you to operate in. Get back on the field of play, you won’t be alone, and I am rooting for you!
