HOUSE OF ROBERTS BLOG
HEY DAD,
What do you do when
you've hit a wall?
I’m sitting here writing in an airplane at a cruising altitude of 30,000+ feet, sandwiched between two little people who seem to have to go to the bathroom every ten minutes. Oh, and I have two more behind me who must think I need a back massage because they keep kicking my seat. It’s amazing what you can endure when you are a parent and especially a dad. However, what do you do when you feel like you’ve hit a wall? What do you do when you feel exhausted, hit your limit, and have no emotional margin? We’ve all been there at some point; some of us may be there right now. You’re not a bad dad if you feel that way, but I think what you do when you have those moments is a big deal.
For some, we handle these moments in an unhealthy way. We disengage from our families or we throw ourselves into work. Others, this is when we turn to destructive behaviors like excessive drinking or pornography. It’s never a fun place to be when you’ve come to the end of yourself, but it’s not necessarily a bad place either. I came across this verse that I pray helps those of us who are at that place today.
2 Chronicles 16:9 says, “The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” I love the thought that God is searching for us. It’s not that God lost us and now is on this mission to find us, but it speaks to his posture. God is not a disengaged God. He is not up in Heaven unaware of what is going on in your life, Dad. He is very aware, and He is not far away from you, He is actually leaning in and searching for you. Not only that, but His heart is to strengthen you. God doesn’t need you to be strong all the time Dad; He is okay if you’re tired or if you’ve come to the end of the inner strength that you have. God’s heart is to come alongside and strengthen you. Sometimes you don’t have certain experiences with God until you come to the end of yourself, so embrace this moment you are in and don’t pray it away.
With that said, there is something that you can be doing right now so that you can experience the strength of Heaven. Stay committed. Don’t back down from your pursuit of God. Don’t give up on Him. Don’t stop spending time with God. Don’t stop reading your Bible, praying, and worshipping Him. Don’t stop consistently attending church and serving God’s people. The Bible says that those of us who are committed to Him and do not wane in times of crisis will experience the strength of God. And Dad, that’s what you need right now. You don’t need to numb yourself right now, you don’t need to look at the crap on the internet, and you don’t need to disengage from your family. What you need is the strength of Heaven, and the beautiful thing is that it is available to you. So today stay committed, and when tomorrow comes choose to stay committed again and watch how each day God will strengthen you. Will you always “feel it”? Probably not, but you’ll get through it without seeing your soul deformed or relationships damaged. And you will get through this Dad. Trust God. Depend on Him. Stay committed to Him.
God is searching for you today, Dad. I pray that He would find you fully committed to Him and that today you would experience supernatural strength for the day. I’m praying for you.
