HOUSE OF ROBERTS BLOG
HEY DAD,
Let's talk about a dad who
did some good and bad stuff...
One of the things that I love about the Bible is how it allows us to see the totality of the people that are in it. We don’t just see the good stuff about them, we also see some of the bad stuff. Especially when we look at the fathers in the Bible. Now for the record, there is only one perfect and good father and that is our Heavenly Father, so take a deep breath if you feel the pressure of having to be perfect. The truth about the dads that we see in the Bible is that there were a lot of bad dads. Some were really messed up, others did some pretty crappy things but also did some good stuff as well. Let’s take a look at one, David the warrior/poet/king. David had a lot of kids and he made quite a few mistakes. I mean, have you ever so offended one of your kids that he led a coup and tried to kill you? Me neither, so I think you are doing okay Dad.
Now one of the things that David did, that I really liked as a father is how he prepared his son Solomon to take over the thrown. He did a couple of really good things. First, he actually recognized that there were things that he would start in his life that Solomon would finish. David really wanted to build a temple for God, but that was not for him to do, that was for his son Solomon to accomplish. So instead of fighting that, David accepted it and did the next best thing a father could do. He prepared Solomon for the task that was on his life. David would begin to gather a ton of material that would be needed in order for the temple to be built, and he would begin to instruct Solomon on who he would need to become in order to build this temple.
Dad, you have a really great call on your life but so do your sons and daughters. As a result, not everything that God has for you will be accomplished in your lifetime but it will be accomplished through your lifeline. So like David, you and I need to begin to help prepare our children to accomplish the call of God that is on their lives. Now, we might not be needing to gather physical materials, but we can make sure that we are equipping our sons and daughters to set them up for success. So yes, you should put them in sports, get them music lessons, place them in schools where they will be challenged, and get them connected into a good youth group. It’s not a bad thing to get them good one-on-one coaching or take them to sports camps. Like David, who was gathering materials for the outside, you are equipping your children with skill sets and mindsets that they will need. The key is to not just focus on the outside, like David, we also have to be concerned with who are children are becoming. What is it if our sons and daughters accomplished much in this life, but their character, who they became, fell short?
You’re a good dad, so commit to preparing your children now so that they will be fully prepared to accomplish all that God has for them. Begin to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you insight on who your children are, how He has gifted them, and what is on their life. I promise you, He will tell you some good stuff about them. Also, ask for wisdom on how you can begin to develop those gifts, and finally don’t neglect their character. Who they are becoming is just as important as what they will be doing. Praying for you!
