What If I told you that your words are a big deal in your family? What if I told you that you could change your future by what you say in the present? I think a lot of us dads underestimate how powerful and necessary our words are in our homes. Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” This verse tells me that I can do some incredible things or some serious damage with just the words that come out of my mouth. Now this verse is true for every area of our lives but let’s just focus on what it can do in the context of your home. 

Dad, your voice is needed more than ever before in your home. Your wife and your children need to hear you speak words of life over them. Dad, your wife needs to hear you speak loving and kind words over her. She needs to consistently hear you say that you love her and tell her how beautiful and appreciated she is. She needs to hear you say what you see on the inside of her and how you feel about her. She needs to hear you say things like, “You can do this.” When she is struggling with something. 

Dad, your kids need your words. Yes, you do a great job providing for them and protecting them. Yes, you have sacrificed so that they could get into the right school and onto that travel team, but they need more than that. They need words of life spoken over them. They as well need to hear you say that you love them. They need to hear you speak to what you see on the inside of them and affirm who they are. They as well need to hear words like, “You’ve got this.” Your boys need to hear you call them men of honor, your daughters need to hear you tell them that they are smart and beautiful. 

Don’t believe the lie that speaking such things over your family is not your personality. Speaking words of life is a choice and every day you can choose to say them. Now do I think that just speaking positive words over family is the only thing they need? No, but it is a necessary part of their physical, emotional, and spiritual growth and it is one of the areas that guys tend to struggle with. 

Some of us don’t say enough, others you’ve gone the opposite way and have been speaking death over your home. Can I encourage you to stop speaking negativity and start speaking Biblical life over your home? I know it may not be what you “see” right now, but that can all change if you start to speak life. You may not “feel” like saying anything but don’t let that stop you. For the record, if you are waiting to feel it before you say it, the devil will make sure that your surrounding circumstances never let you feel it. 

And I get it, you may have grown up in a home where your dad never talked to you or maybe he was verbally abusive with you and if that is the case, I’m sorry that was your experience. For you, I’d encourage you to read your Bible and hear some of the life-giving words that your Heavenly Father is speaking over you. Allow His word to set right that which is deformed by another man’s words. The hope for you though is that that does not need to be your son's and daughter’s experience. You can change that and it starts with your words. 

Never forget this, your voice can actually change the environment and culture in your home because your words have power. So choose today to start speaking “life” over yourself, your marriage, your children, and your home. As you do that, watch how you will soon reap the benefits of what you are saying. You can do this Dad, and I am praying for you.
