HOUSE OF ROBERTS BLOG

HEY DAD,

Here's what God really cares about...

As guys we are doers, we find value in what we build and accomplish. Don’t believe me? Walk into a new environment with a bunch of dudes that you don’t know and within the first 2 minutes of a conversation that you are in one of you will ask the other, “What do you do for a living?” This is not a bad thing, God made us this way. With that said, we have to place the proper amount of importance on that part of our lives. For some, that is the most important part about us, and it is the only thing that we place value on and find worth in. God, however, places a higher value on something else in your life and that is who you are becoming.

See God is more concerned with who you are becoming, than what you are doing. 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” God was speaking of a man named David, who would one day be king. David would accomplish all these great things for God, but what God placed most value on, is who David was and who he was becoming.

Is life then all about becoming someone and not accomplishing anything? No. I’m proposing it is both, but you have to place these two goals in the proper order. If “doing” is placed first before “becoming” then in our pursuit of accomplishing the goals we will become someone God did not intend us to be. However, if we place becoming the person God made us to be first, then we can go at those goals without having to sacrifice our integrity. Even consider Jesus’ great commission to the apostles in Matthew 28; he said to go and make disciples, in other words, help my people become something different than what they currently are.

Dad, God cares about you. He has placed an incredible call on your life, and He wants to see you accomplish all that He has for you. God also cares for the condition of your soul, He desires to see Christ formed in you. He doesn’t just value what you are doing on the outside, He also values what you look like on the inside.

Becoming is started in daily decisions. As you daily decide to spend time with God by reading your Bible, praying, worshipping Him, and acknowledging the Holy Spirit’s role in your life you will start to see yourself growing. Sometimes, the Holy Spirit leads us into a new season where not much is accomplished on the outside, but a renovation of the soul is happening on the inside of us.

I personally find myself in a season of life where I don’t see a ton of accomplishing on the outside which has been tough to work through, but I’m becoming something different. I feel the Holy Spirit sharpening me, refining me, forming Christ in me. Has this been easy? No. Has it always felt good? Nope. Is it necessary? Yes. Look I’m no masochist, and I don’t believe that walking through a tough season of “suffering” makes Jesus love me more. I just believe that these moments are necessary so that I can become more like Jesus and accomplish all that God has for me.

Dad, when was the last time you evaluated who you are becoming? How are you doing as a husband, a father, a leader, a friend, a coworker, a neighbor? Invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart and help you pinpoint areas where you need to grow. Bring in Godly counsel and give them permission to speak into your life and point out areas where you could grow, and not areas of leadership but in areas of character and integrity. It’s good to have goals, it’s good to build great companies, movements, and churches. It is also necessary to become the best version of who God made you to be. So get to work on that, I’ll be praying for you!
