HEY MOM,

Count 'em out loud...

A few years ago, our Pastor was talking to us about how quickly the season of parenting goes. He made a statement that I’ll never forget and sobers me up as a mom every time. He said, “Count how many summers you have left with your kids.” As I sat there in that meeting I could have fallen dramatically on the floor and cried thinking about how with my oldest we only had 11 left! LIKE HOW? How is that possible?  Sometimes when you are in the thick of it with your kids it feels like where you are will last forever, you lose all concept of time because you truly are living moment to moment or day to day in parenthood. It happens…there is no shame in it! That’s why I am forever grateful for this very practical tool that comes up in my heart many times in the year. It instantly brings me back to the present and makes me squeeze my kids and embrace the time we have been given.

Since that moment, Mike and I have determined to make our summers count. Now this doesn’t mean we have to spend an exorbitant amount of money or be running around like chickens with our heads cut off trying to make a book of memories in 2 months, but this does mean we have become very intentional with time spent and memories made. We make it a point to be in the sun a lot together, to learn something new together, to travel somewhere fresh together (even if it’s only a 1hr drive away), to play till the sun goes down, to eat outside as much as we can, to hang and make memories with friends, to have the greatest time at summer camp, to start new or follow through with summer traditions made. TOGETHER is always our goal!

Truth be told this year Mike and I didn’t get to mapping our summer out until days before break started but we did it! We sat down, prayed, and planned for how our days would look with the kids! We made a list of things we wanted to do and how we wanted our days to look and we mapped it out. We make plans for most other areas of our lives so that they will succeed, right? Our business, our clients, our finances, our ministries, so in order for our summers with our kids to succeed there must be a plan in place. Luke 14:28 says “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost…” IT’S NOT TOO LATE!! Do it! Sit down, pray, make a plan, map it out, and commit it to the Lord. This doesn’t take money it just takes time!

Alight, WE GOT THIS!! Count how many summers you have left! First week into summer and believe me there have been moments already where I want to screeeeeam wildly. Everyone is adjusting and the first couple weeks are always the hardest. Breathe deep! Ask Jesus for help and ask Him for your summer plan! Believing this is going to be the sweetest summer yet for all of your families!!
